L'Approche Macro-Linguistique du Fonctionnement des Langues et Ses Implications Pedagogiques: Role du Visuel (The Macro-Linguistic Approach to Language Functions and Its Pedagogical Implications: Role of the Visual Component). Melanges Pedagogiques, 1975.
This article considers the function and choice of visual aids in the teaching of languages in the light of recent work on communicative competence. An analysis of cartoons, comic strips, and television drama demonstrates that authentic verbo-visual communication consists of a network of interactions between visual and verbal information. This analysis also allows for the identification of the role which visual elements can and should play in the acquisition of communicative competence. A parallel analysis of the visual component of some audiovisual materials shows that the selection and role of the visual component reflects pedagogical rather than communicative priorities so that these materials are not an aid to the acquisition of communicative competence.
