L'Apprentissage des Formes Verbales en Anglais (The Acquisition of Verb Forms in English). Melanges Pedagogiques, 1970.
Mauriac, P.
This is a summary of a report investigating the way verb forms are treated in four audiovisual or audiolingual methods (textbooks) for the teaching of introductory English as a second language. The methods under investigation are: (1) "Methode Audio-visuelle d'Anglais, 1," Filipovic; (2) "My Friend Tony--Pratique Audio-Orale des Structures, " Gauthier; (3) "Passport to English, 1," Capelle and Girard; and (4) "Cent Lecons d'Anglais, 1," Alhinc. The verb forms presented, the order in which they are presented, the presentation of adverbs, and exercises are evaluated for each book. It is concluded that solid theoretical reflection is a necessary prerequisite to the elaboration of an oral English method. The student needs an objective, coherent presentation of facts, and not complicated theory nor technical terminology. (Author/AM)
