This article discusses the problem of the relationship between scientific theory and teaching practice, between the linguist and the language teacher. Language instruction attempts more and more to approximate the mother tongue acquisition process, but the two processes remain distinct. However, good second language pedagogy will lead to internalization of grammar. The following suggestions are made with a view toward improving grammar instruction: (1) the notion of grammar should be adjusted; (2) a flexible view of grammar should be adopted; (3) grammatical structure should be synthesized into a coherent whole for the student; and (4) every grammar rule should be clearly explained.
