Models for Student Participation.
The author of this brief examination of student participation in school policy formation recommends that schools committed to increasing student participation provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively with teachers and administrators in decision making groups, for students to influence decision making from groups solely of their own membership, and for considerable student initiative in designing individual academic programs. In addition to presenting models for participation, the author discusses the decision making environment, including legal and political considerations and the changing educational patterns brought about by the emergence of educational alternatives. Accountability, effective communication, dissemination and confidentiality of information, and the precise specification of authority are necessary for effective implementation of student participation.
