The Middle School: 1984 or 2001?
Doda, Nancy M.
The values and progress of the middle school movement are examined in this speech. The impact of the recent emphasis on basic skills and conventional instructional methods on the middle school concept of humanistic education is explored. The author foresees either a frightening, Orwellian future for middle school education in which adolescents are channeled into conformity and obedience, or a positive, humanistic future in which adolescents are given the opportunity to practice democratic values and to develop the abilities for fulfilling their individual potential. She maintains that the decisions made now concerning resources for curriculum and educational programs will determine which future awaits the middle school. (DS)
