This report describes a three-year study of the changes that occurred at Brown Middle School in Hamilton County, Tennessee after it was converted from a junior high school to a middle school in 1974. Part 1, which constitutes most of the report, describes the background and rationale for the changeover, outlines the evaluation procedures and instruments used in the study, and summarizes the evaluation data based on assessments of teacher attitudes and attendance, parent attitudes, and student attendance, discipline, and achievement. Part 2 presents a more detailed analysis of data on student achievement, student attendance, student discipline, and parent attitudes. Part 3 offers a list of suggestions for those planning to start a middle school program, based on the experience of Brown Middle School. (JG)
