Providing Instruction in Reading and Study Skills to Professional/Graduate Students.

The establishment of open admissions policies at institutions of professional/graduate education in recent years has led to the creation of a heterogeneous student clientele, many of whom are deficient in the reading and study skills necessary for academic success. This paper considers the teaching of reading to professional/graduate students. It discusses issues and research findings related to the academic potential of students admitted to professional/graduate schools, the goals and major features of a professional/graduate school setting, and the reading processes that a mature reader must use to gain meaning from professional/technical materials. The paper then suggests a model for a reading/study skills program for professional/graduate school students. (GW)
