Organizing for Student Development.
Dorris, Jo F.
This paper describes the proceedings of a meeting of 20 student personnel professionals, practitioners and educators from across the U.S. They met to develop a conceptual organizational pattern for establishing student development programs. The paper describes not only some of the outcomes, but also the process by which they evolved. It was felt that a sharing of the actual process of developing the model might benefit readers who are attempting to apply it in their own settings. Thus, the paper incorporates four steps: (1) documenting the collective thinking of the task force; (2) integrating the proposed conceptual models with currently existing models, resulting in an organizational chart; (3) requesting all conference participants to read and respond to the accuracy of the chart; and (4) synthesizing this feedback into a paper reflecting both process and content of the task force's work. The result should be useful to anyone interested in developing programs or environments conductive to total student growth. (Author/BP)
