School Desegregation: A Report of State and Federal Judicial and Administrative Activity as of September 1977.
National Inst. of Education (DHEW), Washington, DC. Educational Equity Group.
The Desegregation Studies Staff of N.I.E. compiled this list of current State and Federal judicial and administrative activities to enforce school desegregation. This list includes all active cases. Most voluntary actions to desegregate are not included, nor are successful efforts by HEW or State governments to negotiate local desegregation plans. Many southern states are under court order to desegregate as a result of actions brought by the Department of Justice from 1965-68. For the most part, only those cases the Justice Department now considers active are included here, as well as cases brought by private plaintiffs that have been brought to the Desegregation Studies Staff's attention. This list draws upon numerous published sources and information supplied by the Department of Justice, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the HEW Office for Civil Rights, the Center for Civil Rights/Notre Dame Law School, the Center for National Policy Review/Catholic University Law School, and individuals within and outside the State and Federal governments who offered information and advice. To help locate decisions, some legal citations are provided. Instead of adhering to standard citation style, only place names are underlined. Cases are listed alphabetically by state and within each state by location. For additional citations to Federal cases, references are provided. (Author/AM)
