Interrelated Explorations in Science: A Report of Field Study. Research Monograph No. 11.

This publication reports the results of a field study of middle school students using a unified science program, Interrelated Explorations in Science (IES). IES emphasizes the ideas, processes, and values common to all of science and utilizes independent study, gaming, dramatization, and values clarification activities to motivate students to learn. This study was designed to study achievement and attitude change differences, correlation of achievement and attitude, and correlation change. The experimental design, instrumentation, and data analysis are included in detail. Results of the study indicated that the IES program appeared to have had no significant effect on student achievement and only partial effect on student attitudes. Gaming was likewise studied and was found to have a significant impact on student achievement. Three appendices in the report include comments from field test sites, games descriptions, and a report on accreditation standards. (MA)
