School Principals: Leaders or Managers?
Reed, Rodney J.
The overall objective of this study of 43 elementary and secondary principals is to provide greater insight into the nature of the principalship and into the characteristics of principals and their schools. More specifically, the objectives are to determine whether the study of the principalship and of principals by school level or location should be continued; to provide a conceptual framework for examining the tasks of the principal; to examine perceptions of principals regarding preparation programs; to examine the efforts and the influence of principals in bringing about change in the schools; to examine patterns of career aspirations of principals; and to examine the job satisfaction of principals. The conceptual framework used in examining the tasks of the principal included consideration of school management, educational leadership, teacher and staff personnel, student personnel, and parent and community relations. The typical principal in this study is concerned more with educational leadership than with school management. A bibliography and the survey questionnaire are included. (Author/IRT)
