The Philosophy of Composition.
Hirsch, E. D., Jr.
Addressed to teachers of composition and to other professional students of prose, this book develops a philosophy of composition based on the nature and history of writing. Chapters discuss distinctive features of written speech, the normative character of written speech, progressive tendencies in the history of language and prose, refinement of the concept of readability, and the psychological bases of readability. In addition to the development of a theoretical schema to explain the composition process, additional chapters delineate some practical implications of the theory for teaching and research and discuss the valid assessment of writing ability.
