This report describes the proceedings of a symposium on the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (SFP), held in January, 1977. The symposium was intended to bring together a variety of individuals concerned with providing adequate nutrition and health care to low-income mothers, pregnant women, infants and young children. The report includes the following chapters: (1) Background to the Symposium, including a brief history of WIC and SFP; (2) Excerpts from the Speeches (by congressional leaders, a pediatrician, HEW and USDA officials, and others); (3) Workshop Discussions and Recommendations, on five topics: Health and Nutritional Issues, Administrative Issues, Preserving the Supplemental Food Program, Evaluating SFP and WIC, and Sustaining and Expanding SFP and WIC; and (4) Nutrition Programs for Women and Children: A Proper Place in National Public Policy. Appendices include the symposium program; workshop leaders; symposium participants; resource room materials; symposium financial statement; members of the National Advisory Council on Maternal, Infant, and Fetal Nutrition and the Advisory Committee on Nutrition Evaluation; and the Children's Foundation WIC resources.
