Teaching Concepts: An Instructional Design Guide.
Merrill, M. David; Tennyson, Robert D.
The purpose of this book is to assist teachers, instructional developers, curriculum planners, textbook authors, etc., to design and develop instructional materials to teach concepts. Five empriically validated procedures are used: (1) definition, (2) expository presentation of example/nonexample pairs, (3) attribute isolation help for each example and nonexample, (4) an inquisitory practice presentation with feedback, and (5) test classification by inquisitory test presentation. The writing style is non-academic and the emphasis is on the "how to" rather than "why." The book presents an integrated set of procedures with illustrations and instructional devices to facilitate learning. Also covered are procedures for designing instructional strategies and evaluation. (Author/DAG)
