The proportions of a sample of Australian postsecondary students who continued with full-time study, the nature of that study, the institution at which it occurred, and the students' success were investigated in this research study. Those criterion variables were then related to the students' sex and father's occupation by means of two- and three-way tables. For the two largest states, Victoria and New South Wales, multivariate analyses were performed to determine the type of student who: (1) engaged in full-time study, (2) selected differing fields of study, (3) enrolled at different types of institutions, and (4) experienced differing degrees of success in their studies. The variables used to define student characteristics were grouped under three major divisions: family background, achievement, and attitudes. (Author/LBH)
