Facilitating the Integration of Hearing Impaired Children Into Regular Public School Classes. Final Report.
Bitter, Grant B.; Johnston, Kay A.
Presented is the final report of Project NEED (Normal Educational Environment for the Hearing Impaired) designed to develop and produce a mediated orientation package for regular classroom teachers to assist them in meeting the needs of hearing impaired students, to facilitate integration of hearing impaired children into regular classes through inservice orientation workshops, and to disseminate and share information about integration with all who might be or who are now involved with educational placement of hearing impaired children. Described are such project activities as the development and utilization of two working papers dealing with integration of hearing impaired children into regular classes; the explanation and utilization of workshops, seminars, and other meetings on integration which were held with regular teachers, teachers of the hearing impaired, support personnel and other specialists, administrators, and parents; and the production of nine sound filmstrip modules with matching cassette tapes. The bulk of the document consists of appended materials which include the following: international correspondence; Publishers Alert Service's Announcement of Systems O.N.E. (Orientation to the Normal Environment) media package; state survey results; "Review of Literature--Integration of Exceptional Children into Regular School Classes;" a table with data on on-site visits to integration programs; "Integration of the Hearing Impaired--Educational Issues;" and reactions to Systems O.N.E. (SBH)
