A Study of the Community Adjustment of Deinstitutionalized Mentally Retarded Persons. Volume V. An Analysis of Factors Associated with Community Adjustment.
Gollay, Elinor
Presented in the fifth of a six volume series is an analysis of 25 variables associated with aspects of community adjustment for 440 deinstitutionalized mentally retarded persons. The first section deals with such research methodology aspects as instrument design and data gathering. The second section contains a profile of outcome and predictor variables (individual characteristics, institutional experiences, institutional characteristics, and community characteristics). Differences in variables according to level of retardation and age of Ss are described in the third section. Section four potrays the correlations among major categories of variables, and section five presents the results of step-wise regressions using the five outcome variables: returning to the institution, overall activity level in the community, unmet needs in the community, and independence of residential setting in the community. Among the conclusions listed in the sixth section are that a person's age, level of retardation, and involvement in institutional activities prior to release have a direct affect on post-institutional adjustment.
