This volume discusses various aspects of nonverbal communication and provides an extensive bibliography of journal articles, listed by author, that are relevant to the topic. Commentary is divided into six sections: "Considerations in Nonverbal Communication," which examines the impact of motion and rhythm, the components of nonverbal communication, human communication, comparison of animal and human behavior, the acquisition of communication skills, and so on; "Review of the Literature," which lists some of the major compendiums of research and discussion on the subject; "Notation Systems," which describes the history and development of such systems as dance, kinesic, and paralinguistic notation; "The Elements of Nonverbal Behavior," which examines kinesics, proxemics, chronemics, and so on; "Specific Nonverbal Acts," which explores such behavior as outcries, mimicry, and deictic gestures; and "Dialects and Varieties of Nonverbal Behavior," which focuses on patterned individual and group behavior, cultural dialects, language substitutes and surrogates, and cross-cultural varieties.
