This course outline describes English 100, a diagnostic and placement course in freshmen composition implemented in 1975 at Parkland Community College, Champaign, Illinois. It is a two-week course required of every Parkland student entering the writing program at the level of English 099 or above and leads to one of three composition courses. Its purposes are to assess students' strengths and weaknesses in reading and in fundamental writing skills and to aid in placing them in the courses and programs appropriate to their abilities and goals. Students are required to take a locally developed vocabulary test and cloze passage test and the English usage test, Written English Expression Placement Test, of the Comparative Guidance and Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. They are also asked to write a paragraph in class. On the basis of these four measures, placement is suggested in an advanced course, an academic or career-oriented course, or a review course. The course outline includes a daily schedule for English 100, course descriptions for the other composition courses, and test instructions for students. (MKM)
