This special issue focuses on the nature of the reading process, the nature of language, and the nature of the relationships between them. Specific topics discussed include the bias of language in speech and writing, the functions of language, trends in second-language-acquisition research, learning about psycholinguistic processes by analyzing oral reading, evidence in support of a verbal-deficit hypothesis in dyslexia, an interactionist approach to advancing literacy, an historical exploration of the nature of literacy, making sense of reading and of reading instruction, varieties of deficiency in the reading process, and the relationship of reading to other modes of symbolic processing.
