Hansen; doctoral programs in new and emerging institutions by Edwin L. Lively; the ACE report on rating of graduate programs by Trevor Colbourn, Eric Rodgers, Stephen E. Wiberley, and Francis M. Boody; the position of the graduate dean in times of an austerity budget by Rocco E. Porreco; faculty unionization by Henry V. Bohm; and the place of the dissertation in the training of graduate students by D.C. Spriestersbach. The role of the National Science Foundation in graduate education is discussed by Lloyd Humphreys; and a report of the Wingspread Conference on the Doctor of Arts Degree is offered by Alvin H.
