Dutch Preschool Education: A Right and Not a Privilege.
Sailor, Dorothy
This document presents a survey of Dutch preschools, the Kleuterschools, and research projects in early childhood education. A brief background on the Kleuterschool is included. Both private and public schools are totally funded by the national government. Although it is not compulsory, most 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds attend preschool. The philosophy of these schools is quite eclectic combining the methods of Froebel, Decroly and using some Montessori materials. In addition, Russian psychology has had some influence on research projects. Described are a classroom day, curriculum and teacher training. The current trend is toward integration of the preprimary and primary school with a "teaching community" to avoid repetition and provide reading and mathematics for the more mature preprimary children.
