This book is an overview of leisure in modern society and the various kinds of organizations that provide leisure services. The attitudes and behaviors of people engaged in leisure and recreation are examined. In twelve chapters the following topics are explored: (1) the concepts of leisure in historical perspective; (2) various lines of reasoning concerning trends in the amount of leisure in contemporary society; (3) the relationship between work and leisure; (4) the effect of education on leisure activity and education as a leisure behavior; (5) the ways in which religious belief conditions leisure attitudes and activities; (6) the psychological approach to leisure in the lives of individuals at different ages; (7) the meaning of leisure in relation to the family in sociological perspective; (8) sexual behavior considered from the perspective of leisure activity; (9) the forms of leisure activity within the community, their extent, scope, sponsors, and participants; (10) the role of government at various levels in the provision of leisure services; (11) the process by which community-based leisure service agencies set goals and make decisions; (12) the successful use of leisure from the standpoint of both individuals and leisure service organizations, some possible goals and ideals.
