Report of the Conference on Needed Research and Development on Hand-Held Calculators in School Mathematics.
The first section of this conference report attempts to set a context for the research and development recommendations made by the conferees and to reflect certain guidelines and cautions that participants felt were important. General background and some working assumptions, the present state of mathematics education as a context for conference recommendations, and some failed dichotomies, priorities for curriculum development, and tentative guidelines for research and curriculum development are covered in Section I. In Section II, twenty-two recommendations made by conference participants are recorded. First, the recommendations are listed under six categories: development of an information base, curriculum development for the immediate future, curriculum development for the long-range future, research and evaluation, teacher education, and dissemination. Then, for each of the recommendations, the conference discussion concerning that recommendation is reported and examples of suitable activities are given. Finally, the report concludes with summaries of presentations of resource persons. (DT)
