Preliminary Report of the Faculty Development Survey. Special Report.
Association of American Medical Colleges, Washington, DC.
The Division of Faculty Development of the Association of American Medical Colleges conducted a faculty development survey to learn how medical faculty members have prepared for their roles as teachers by looking at both their formal training in teaching and the way the reported workshops and previous teaching experiences had influenced them; to identify the specific instructional practices used by faculty members in particular situations; to identify problem areas in instruction; and to identify problematic areas where faculty members would be willing to accept outside assistance. Variables analyzed include school size, school ownership, academic department, rank, sex, age, degrees, tenure, teaching load, primary-care specialist, percent of time training primary-care specialists, years since completion of training, years salaried, courses in education taken, workshops in education attended, and teaching sites. The results presented in this preliminary report provide initial baseline data on medical school faculty members and their approach to teaching. The analyses are strictly statistical and no interpretations are attempted. (JMF)
