Right to Read, Teacher Education Project: Effects of a Modular, Independent Study Program Entitled "Teaching Reading to Minorities."
Mills, Leonard Lee
This study attempted to assess the effects on the achievement and attitudes of preservice teachers at Washington State University of a modular independent study program about teaching reading to minority children. A total of 81 students was randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group completed five self-instructional modules about teaching reading to children in several minority groups: Black American, Mexican American, Native American, and Asian American. Data revealed that the modular program was effective in imparting knowledge about teaching reading to minority children. However, no significant differences in the way that students viewed themselves with regard to their preparedness to teach in this area were revealed as a result of program intervention. (Author/KS)
