Reading Reflections: The History of the International Reading Association.
Jerrolds, Bob W.
This history traces the International Reading Association (IRA) back to its roots in the organization of the International Council for the Improvement of Reading Instruction and of the National Association of Remedial Teachers, which merged to form the IRA in 1956. DeveloPments since 1956 are discussed chronologically, with attention to the emphases at the annual conventions, publications, committee work, and leadership. The chronology is presented in separate sections on new beginnings as IRA, consolidating gains and moving ahead, growing up on a budget, the quest for change and efficiency, the publications explosion, extending frontiers, restraint and a search for financial stability, a period of orderly growth, and a vision of the future. A lengthy series of appendixes presents information on convention sites, annual awards, election results, publications, budget growth, and membership figures. (AA)
