Kierzek, John M.; And Others
This handbook of English is divided into three major sections. In the first section, "The Expression and Communication of Thought," chapter one considers the task of writing, including different kinds of essays, style, and the use of standard English. The second chapter is devoted to the process of planning and writing and examines problems of subject and focus, problems of writing and revising, and the formal outline. Chapter three discusses various aspects of the research paper, and chapter four explains the letter and its parts. Section two, "The Elements of Structure: Sentences and Paragraphs," discusses grammatical and rhetorical patterns in sentences and the paragraph. Section three, "A Handbook of Writing and Revision," contains chapters on grammar and usage, mechanics, punctuation, spelling, words and phrases, and the paragraph. The fourth section, "A Guide to Usage," is a glossary. (LL)
