Downtown Study Centre--Nanaimo. First Annual Report, 1975-76.
Harrison, David; And Others
This report describes the 1975-76 operations of the Downtown Study Centre, a demonstration project offering service in adult basic education and advisement. The center offered "start anytime" open-entry, open-exit courses in English and mathematics at all levels, from basic literacy and numeracy through grade 12 equivalency. During 1975-76, 189 adults studied at the center. Of this group: (1) 165 were between 17 and 44 years of age; (2) 14 were unemployed; (3) the majority engaged in studies for the purpose of self-improvement and enhancement of employment potential; (4) 39 received a grade 12 diploma; and (5) 60 obtained or returned to a job. Overall, the project was evaluated as successful since it provided adult basic education service to individuals suffering educational handicaps. In terms of the advisement function of the project, it was estimated that the Centre responded to approximately 1,200 inquiries during the year, and that in-depth advisement was performed in approximately 360 cases. Appended are a flyer describing the purposes and offerings of the Centre, a background and brief chronology of Centre funding proposals and difficulties, and a statement of operating expenses for 1975-76.
