The present study aims at identifying the nature and extent of private effort in providing formal education in the province of the Punjab, with special reference to financial motivations. The specific objectives of the study were (1) to give a historical description of the emergence of the system of privately managed schools; (2) to describe the role of the private sector in the financing of formal education; (3) to analyze people's motivations for supporting the privately managed schools financially; (4) to identify the various sources of finance for these schools; (5) to assess the future role of the private sector in the Punjab; and (6) to examine the international implications of the system of privately managed institutions, particularly for the developing countries.
