Analysis of an Alternative Reading Strategy for Elementary Students.
Anderson, Carol M.
An elementary school reading-interest project was designed to overcome summer learning loss and to foster an interest in independent reading. The major strategy, "The Reading Interest Passport," consisted of nine independent reading contracts leading to "badges." This approach was selected after consideration of cost, coordination with ongoing programs, simplicity, and adaptability. Changes in reading achievement between April and September were used to compare 25 pupils in the experimental program with 25 taught during the summer with a basal reader approach and with 25 who had no school-related summer activities. Results indicated that students in the reading-interest project made significant gains in comparison with the other two groups. Implications of the study for regular school programs, as well as for summer programs, are discussed. (Author/AA)
