Rights of Privacy and Research Needs: A Problem Whose Time Has Arrived.
Hayman, John L. Jr.
There is no more fundamental right in our system than the right of privacy--the right to be let alone. Current trends lead to a major assault on this right, and one of the great tests of the viability of our system is its ability to preserve this right in the face of increasing complexity and increasing needs for control. As part of the scientific community, educational researchers contribute to the assault on privacy; and it is part of their responsibility to counter this movement and to preserve our basic values. It is obvious that strong action on the part of the American Educational Research Association is needed and needed soon. Topics discussed include historical background, common law, appropriation, public disclosure, the constitution, recent legislation and court findings, current needs and problems, and the critical need for guidelines and policies.
