Self-Instructional Devices: A Review of Current Concepts.

A selective review of the literature on self-instructional devices is presented, with emphasis on those studies which provide for a functional analysis of such devices. Three major classes of variables which influence the effectiveness of learning by means of self-instructional devices are discussed: the characteristics of the device, the characteristics of the program, and the characteristics of the learner. Attention is devoted to an analysis of the sequencing of material which maximizes the rate of learning and degree of retention with a focus on those variables which affect this programing process. A working model of the learning process is presented which is based on the theories of conditioning. The report includes a 37 reference bibliography. (KB)
