The Cutting Edge: The First National Conference on Special Emerging Programs in Higher Education.
The National Conference on Special Emerging Programs in Higher Education focused on (1) Support Programs for Culturally Different Students; (2) Environmental Studies, and (3) Ethnic Studies. The specific objectives were: (1) to examine the impact of Special Programs on higher education, to include the degree of impact which these programs exert on surrounding communities; (2) to stimulate interest in, and an awareness of, contributions made by Special Programs in higher education; (3) to explore current trends in program funding and the future outlook for Special Programs; (4) to discuss crucial problem areas such as: (a) funding and budgetary constrains, (b) how special programs might become permanent parts of the university structure; (5) to share experiences which would facilitate communication between similar programs; and, (6) to consider the promotion of a professional Society of Ethnic and Special Studies personnel. All the conference goals were obtained, culminating in the formation of the Society of Ethnic and Special Studies that will assist in conference planning and promoting the interest of Special Programs on a nation wide basis.
