Innovations in Education for the Seventies: Selected Readings. Accountability, Behavioral Objectives, Differentiated Staffing, Education Vouchers, Individualized Instruction, Open Education.
De Carlo, Julia E., Ed.; Madon, Constant A., Ed.
A variety of innovations are being introduced in schools throughout the country for the purposes of improving instruction and enriching the learning experiences of students. This text covers six major innovations in education. They are: (1) accountability; (2) behavioral objectives; (3) differentiated staffing; (4) education vouchers; (5) individualized instruction; and (6) open education. Each innovation is discussed in a separate section with three to four articles submitted by different authors. Articles selected give the theory, description, analysis, and reaction to each innovation. Whenever applicable, material was selected that reflected actual classroom experiences so that a reader could formulate relationships between what has occurred in a particular situation and his own teaching activities. There are four major areas for which this material could be used. They include: (1) foundation of education courses; (2) curriculum courses; (3) general methods courses; and (4) student-teaching seminars. The student in the foundations course can study the relationship between these innovations and their origins in the social, philosophical, and psychological foundations. In curriculum study, it is important for the student, teacher, or curriculum specialist not only to be knowledgeable about these innovations but also to be able to use the information in the formulation of new curricula. The student taking a general methodology course should be able to incorporate these new ideas into his teaching strategies. Finally, the student teacher needs to be aware of new programs. (SK)
