Projections of Degrees and Enrollment in Science and Engineering Fields to 1985.
Sulkin, Naomi A.
This report presents projections of the supply of scientists and engineers that are attributable to the higher education system of the United States, with emphasis on doctorate production. The forecasts given are said to represent numerical results that have been derived from specific models of the science and engineering manpower system. As such they are subject to the limitations of the models, and to the uncertainties inherent in the assumptions used. The two alternative sets of assumptions which underlie the projections presented here are explicitly outlined in the report, and sensitivity analyses are presented for possible further adjustment of the numerical results. A summary of the major trend relationships in Science/Engineering Education, past and projected, is given. Appendices include an overview of a projection model with a detailed description of its application at each stage of the higher education process covered by the report. Statistical tables and an extensive bibliography are included. (Author/EB)
