A Review of Programs for Low Achievers in Grade 9 and 10 Mathematics. Resources Review, October 1975.
Murray, S.; Boxall, R.
This brief review concentrates on ten commercially produced programs for general mathematics courses in grades 9 and 10. The review is designed to assist teachers in assessing programs for low-achieving mathematics students. Nine Australian schools participated in a test project of these programs during the last term of 1974. For each program, the full title of the program is listed, its publisher, a description of the materials used, cost, and teacher comments about the program. Some programs provide for individual instruction and short term goals; others present mathematics in a concrete manner through various games and other novel approaches; environmental and practical problems form the basis of still other programs outlined. A table presents an overview of the programs tested, rating the programs in terms of emphasis upon such aspects as environmental and mathematical topics, low reading age, improving problem solving techniques, increasing computational skills, using a carefully sequenced mathematics program, and involvement of students with concrete materials.
