Master File Feasibility Study.
Broadbent, William A.
The three purposes for which this study was conducted involved collection and summarization of otherwise unavailable data on student characteristics and aspirations, editing and summarization of reading test data collected over the past six years, and testing of the feasibility and utility of a computerized master file combining student data derived from numerous sources. A Socio-Cultural Survey instrument was designed to obtain data on student backgrounds and aspirations and was administered during student registration. These survey data were combined with statistical analyses of reading test data, and were compiled with other extant student data to form a resultant master file which was tested for utility through employment of various exercises. In order to maintain the master file on an on-going basis, data obtained for this study by survey will be collected in the future by counselors during the orientation process, using a form providing capability for gathering necessary master file data. This study provided the technology and experience necessary to provide a data bank for analysis and an on-going mechanism for assessing institutional outcomes and effectiveness. Appended are the survey instrument, student Orientation Inventory forms, and summarized reading test data used in the compilation of a student master file. (JDS)
