School Pedestrian Safety for Elementary Schools.

The curriculum guide on School Pedestrian Safety was developed because of the need for an understanding of good safety practices. The guide covers three major areas: Pedestrian Safety, Bus Safety, and Bicycle Safety. The project has been developed in a loose-leaf binder to allow teachers a great deal of flexibility in developing their own program. There are over 350 pieces of art work in this guide which the teacher can duplicate, make an overhead transparency or use on an opaque projector. The teacher, depending on the grade level, may wish to duplicate only certain aspects of the program and have students develop their own safety books using pictures from magazines, write stories and create their own art work. In the primary grades, some of the written materials will be difficult for the children to read and teachers may wish to change the vocabulary to fit their own class. The authors have found the use of fifth and sixth grade student tutors to be quite beneficial in teaching this program to the lower grades. (Author)
