Readings in Geographical Education: Selections from Australian and New Zealand Sources, Volume 2, 1966-1972.
Biddle, D. S., Ed.; Deer, C. E., Ed.
This anthology provides geography teachers with a sample of periodical literature available in Australian and New Zealand professional association journals. The articles, published between 1969 and 1972, are relevant to secondary- and college-level geography education. An introductory chapter defines the objectives and methods of geographical education in the 1970s. Next is a section on the role of geographic education in developing citizenship and environmental ethics. A section on curriculum development includes discussions of commonly taught concepts and an explanation of a field study conducted by students to apply concepts to local conditions. Another section explores the study of natural, agricultural, urban, and manufacturing systems. Teaching strategies in the classroom include simulation games and inductive inquiry; teaching strategies in the field include river and urban studies. A section on testing and evaluation gives perspective on the purposes, methods, and reliability of assessment in geography. (Author/AV)
