Project TORQUE/A New Approach to the Assessment of Children's Mathematical Competence.
Education Development Center, Inc., Newton, MA.
This booklet describes an alternative approach to testing the mathematical abilities of elementary school students. The booklet is highly critical of the use of standardized tests for many purposes, and both the introduction and an appendix are devoted to those criticisms. This project for Tests of Reasonable Quantitative Understanding of the Environment (TORQUE) has as its objective the development of tests which accommodate individual children's styles. They are minimally dependent on cultural background, involve minimal reading, eliminate "bookkeeping" by students, are of diagnostic value, and induce minimal anxiety on the part of students. The tests are developed using an activity or game approach, and are criterion referenced. The processes of test development for three diagnostic achievement tests (measurement, computation, and estimation) are described. Games to be used in these tests are reproduced. (SD)
