Planning Library Workshops and Institutes.
Libraries, library systems, library schools, state library agencies, and library associations are responsible for workshops and institutes for library personnel which may be either subject-based or problem-based. Planning must include commitment to the project, selection of a director and planning group, and establishment of a working relationship between the planning group and sponsoring organization, and it must allow plenty of time for organizing. Objectives and goals must be set before a program may be blocked out, and costs must be analyzed realistically before fees are set. Next, the types of presentations should be determined--speakers, panels, role-playing sessions, demonstrations, innovative programs, audiovisual programs, exhibits, or group discussions? Someone must make final arrangements for space, equipment, lodging, meals, transportation, personnel, announcements, and registration. Finally, an evaluation should be made to determine the effectiveness of the program, and proceedings and materials developed for or during the project should be given wide dissemination for the benefit of other librarians.
