External Degree Study: A New Route to Careers.
Nero, John; And Others
One of the products developed by the Home and Community-Based Career Education Project, the booklet on external degree study is intended for those persons who want to pursue postsecondary education but because of home, job, or other responsibilities are unable to do so in the traditional manner. It discusses alternative forms of postsecondary education in which credit may be earned for study at home, on the job, in field work situations, and in part-time courses, as well as in traditional course work. The booklet describes the method of study, presents a list of major programs, discusses how to select and plan a program, and shows how external degree study may be used as career preparation. Advantages as well as limitations of external degree study are given. Nine typical degree programs in the northeast are outlined and listings of other institutions offering such study are included, along with resources and references for further information. (MF)
