To Know By Experience: Outward Bound, North Carolina.
Meyer, Dan; Meyer, Diane
Directed at discovering one's inner resources and the dignity of one's fellow man, the Outward Bound experience seeks to instill self-reliance, physical fitness, and compassion as fundamental values recognizing there are few opportunities to formulate such values in an increasingly technological and urbanized society. For 3 1/2 weeks, people from all walks of life are brought together to share the challenges of elemental settings. Upon arrival, participants are assigned to a small crew with whom the experience is shared. Activities are divided into: instruction--to develop physical conditioning and the necessary skills and teamwork to enable the crew to carry out subsequent activities under progressively less supervision; expedition--to refine techniques and build confidence and trust within the individuals and in the crew; solo--to afford each individual a chance to reflect and consider the past and future; service--to experience the manifold benefits of giving of one's self; and conclusion--to allow the crew to become totally responsible for setting goals, resolving difficulties, and safely carrying through its plan. This book graphically conveys the Outward Bound experience through more than 80 photographs with accompanying quotations from participants. The purpose of rock climbing, backpacking and white water expeditions, solo and other activities is described. A history of how the school came into being as one of seven in the United States is provided. (NQ)
