An Investigation of the Effects of Pre-Reading Guides on the Comprehension of Short Stories by Ninth Grade Students.
Quick, Charles David
The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of pre-reading guides would effect better comprehension in the reading of short stories by ninth grade public school students. Four pre-reading guide sheets were prepared and validated for use in this study for each of the following stories: "The Interlopers" by Saki, "The Necklace" by DeMaupassant, "The Wise and the Weak" by Aponte, and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by Thurber. The population for this study was divided into control and experimental groups, 145 students in each group. On the combined subtests, a significant difference in mean test scores was shown to exist between the control and experimental groups; however, it was the control group that achieved the significantly greater mean score. Also, a significant difference was found to exist between age groups 13-14 and 15-16 years on mean test scores for the combined subtests. (Author/RB)
