The Social Mobility-Fertility Hypothesis: A Racial and Class Comparison Among Southern Females.

Utilizing data derived from the Southern Youth Study (a six-year, three-wave panel of 528 rural women from the Deep South), the utility of a version of the Social Mobility Fertility Hypothesis was investigated. Specifically, the relationship between mobility attitudes of sophomores and seniors and their subsequent fertility behavior was assessed by race and class. Anchored by social origins (mother's occupational level and breadwinner's occupation), the measures of social mobility attitudes employed were mobility for self via education and mobility for future family via future mate's occupation. In order to partially replicate previous studies, a multiphase analysis was conducted utilizing contingency tables, social mobility tables, correlation and regression coefficients, and path analytic techniques. Results indicated that: both measures of adolescent social mobility attitudes for seniors were inversely related to subsequent early fertility behavior among white lower class females; only sophomore mobility attitudes for the future family were inversely related to fertility in the white middle class; neither measure of social mobility attitudes had a significant effect on black lower class fertility, but short distance mobility for the future family and long distance mobility for self appeared to have a negative effect on black fertility.
