Oklahoma Indian Education Needs Assessment. Volume I: Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations.

As the first in a four-volume series on the Oklahoma Indian Education Needs Assessment Project, this report presents: an overview of the entire project; a summary of the perceptions and current status of Oklahoma Indian education; and conclusions and recommendations. Survey instruments are identified as the Educational Goals and Needs Survey and the Individual School District Questionnaire (educational programs). The current educational status is identified in terms of: the common school system; the BIA school system; vocational-technical education; higher education; other statewide activities in education; academic achievement; social/emotional development; economic conditions. Among the major recommendations presented are the need for: increases in higher and adult education assistance and funding; development of a massive awareness campaign relative to Indian education; development of statewide teacher training institutes for Indian education awareness and culture; active recruitment of Indian professionals; development of continuing education programs in agri-business, home maintenance/operation, land development, and management training; evaluations of Indian education programs to include Indian input; comprehensive evaluation of BIA schools; use of construction funds to remodel existing facilities a la the community education center concept.
