Children in Their Free Time.
Beck, T. M.
This report presents an investigation of after-school care for primary school children in Western Australia. The needs of primary school children are discussed, and care provided through schools and communities is examined. The headmasters of 110 primary schools, in response to a questionnaire, reported a strong belief that many children were neglected and at risk as a consequence of the mother working outside the home. Additional survey results (from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Survey, May 1973, and newspaper investigations) revealed that many children attended after school clubs and activities, but it was not ascertained whether these were the same children who did not have parents at home after school. Statistical data and comments from questionnaire responses, government studies, professional literature, and community sources are reported. It is recommended that at least one teacher in every school should be responsible for developing and implementing proposals for school-community efforts to insure the recreational and social welfare of all children attending the school.
