A Good Beginning for Babies: Guidelines for Group Care.

This book presents principles, guidelines, and procedures for establishing and maintaining a quality group care environment (either family- or center-based) for infants in the first year of life. The following areas are covered: (1) a general statement of program goals, (2) relationships with families, (3) program and staff organization, (4) a typical day in the nursery from the perspective of the caregiver, (5) play and learning, (6) management of crying and the relief of distress, (7) routine caregiving, with emphasis on caregiver-infant interaction during feeding, diapering and naptime, (8) staff composition, training and morale, (9) physical space and equipment, and (10) health and safety. Included are lists of resources related to infant care and appendices containing sample information sheets and daily records, plus an outline of selected developmental landmarks during an infant's first two years of life.
