Credit for Learning--A Proposed Alternative Approach to the Policy of Granting College Credit at Bristol Community College.

This practicum recommends a policy of granting academic credit for prior learning as a viable alternative to the traditional accrediting policy of Bristol Community College (BCC) in Massachusetts. The polity recommendation is based on an extensive survey of the literature, and a national survey of 100 randomly selected colleges and universities. Of the 54 colleges responding, 63 percent had some sort of Credit for Learning policy, of which nine are described in detail in this practicum. Also serving as background for this practicum are an institutional student and faculty questionnaire and interviews with the college registrar and assistant dean of academic affairs. All 160 members of the BCC faculty were surveyed, and 71 responded (45 percent); 340 students, representing 10 percent of the BCC student body were surveyed, and 274 responded (81 percent). The overall reaction to a Credit for Learning policy by the faculty, students, and administrators was overwhelmingly positive. Procedures for successfully implementing the proposed policy are listed, a bibliography is appended, the survey instruments are included, and survey data are organized into tables. (NHM)
